Leonard the Lyrebird: A Musical Story

This musical story is an original Australian composition by Ian Munro, based on the book “Leonard the Lyrebird” written by Jodie McLeod, illustrated by Eloise Short.

What to expect

When you enter, you will be greeted by people either wearing Sensory Concerts T-shirts.

They are staff who will check your tickets and help with any questions.

Space

The space looks something like this. You can sit anywhere you like!

The concert is about 30 minutes long. The story is narrated by the composer himself, Ian, and the music performed by Grace (piano), Phil (clarinet), and Teije (cello). There will be an opportunity to sing along if you are keen!

Here is a picture of the team:

Meet the animals in the story!

Leonard the Lyrebird

Leonard is a lyrebird who lives In the Blue Mountains. He loves to sing and can mimic other birds and animals. Leonard wishes he had a lyrebird friend.

Lilah the Lyrebird

Lilah is a lyrebird who lives in the Blue Mountains. She wants to be friends with Leonard but only if he can sing her “the most impressive song of all”. What song will that be?

Bunyip

The bunyip is an aboriginal mythical creature whose role in dreamtime storytelling was to help protect the mob. In this story, Leonard doesn’t see the bunyip, but he imagines how the bunyip might sound.

Fox

The fox in this story sneaks up on Lilah and is ready to pounce, but a very brave lyrebird stops him and saves Lilah. Can you guess who that might be?

You will also hear other bird sounds during the performance. Here is a little preview of the music on YouTube.

We are looking forward to seeing you at our Sensory Concert on 13 April!
